Ramekon O'Arwisters

"Marking You/Marking Me"

Social-practice artist Ramekon O'Arwisters, who is known for organizing Crochet Jam–a collaborative, community-based art project infused with the folk-art tradition of crocheting rag-rugs, has developed over the past seventeen years a series of ink drawings using a nontraditional-marking tool. Ramekon's Marking You/Marking Me is a series of original drawings in which Brazil nuts serve as coded carriers of social and political commentary on American society. In this body of work, food associated with African Americans becomes visual stand-ins for the racial and class prejudices deeply embedded inside American culture.

Born in Kernersville, North Carolina, Ramekon earned a M.Div. from Duke University Divinity School in 1986. He was an artist-in-residence at the de Young Museum (2013), the Djerassi Resident Artists Program (2003), and the Vermont Studio Center (1991), and has received grants from the San Francisco Foundation, the San Francisco Arts Commission Cultural Equity Program, and Artadia: The Fund for Art and Dialogue, New York, NY. He was a 2014 Eureka Fellow, awarded by the Fleishhacker Foundation, San Francisco. He is 2016 Artist-in-Residence at Recology SF. Ramekon is the former curator of fine-art photography at SFO Museum. He lives and works in San Francisco.
